Day 42 · Live
Love your neighbor (really)
"You shall love your neighbor as yourself." — Matthew 22:39
Jesus summed up all of God's law in two commandments: love God with all that you are, and love your neighbor as yourself. The second is inseparable from the first. You can't love God and despise the people He created.
But who is your neighbor? Jesus answered that question with the parable of the Good Samaritan: Your neighbor is anyone who needs your help, regardless of race, religion, social status, or whether you like him. Love of neighbor is not selective.
Loving one's neighbor in practice looks like this: listening without judgment, helping without expecting something in return, being patient with difficult people, giving without calculating, and serving without posting about it. It's uncomfortable. It is costly. And that's exactly what Jesus did for us.
Giving God time produces love for people. It is impossible to spend time with the God of love and come away indifferent. If your faith isn't producing compassion for others, you need to go back to Day 1 and start over.
Today, identify a person near you who needs love. And love them with actions, not just words.
Prayer
Father, open my eyes to the needs around me. Give me a compassionate heart and hands ready to serve. Amen.
