Forgiveness liberates
"But be kind to one another, merciful, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ." — Ephesians 4:32
Forgiveness is one of the most difficult teachings of Jesus. Not because it's hard to understand, but because it's hard to practice. Someone hurt you, betrayed you, lied to you. And now God asks you to forgive.
But here's the truth most don't see: forgiveness isn't for the other person. It's for you. When you carry resentment, the person who suffers the most is you. It's like taking poison hoping that the other will get sick. Resentment chains you to the past; forgiveness frees you to move toward the future.
Paul reminds us of the foundation: forgive as God forgave you in Christ. How much did God forgive you? Everything. When? Before you asked. On what condition? None. If God could forgive you, He will give you the strength to forgive others.
Forgiving doesn't mean that what they did was right. It means that you choose not to let that pain continue to control your life. Giving God time includes giving Him those wounds to heal as you decide to let go.
Prayer
Father, it is difficult for me to forgive. But today I choose to obey. Give me the strength to let go of what hurts me. Free me from resentment. Amen.
